நம் தமிழுக்குத் தொண்டாற்றியோர் பலர். அதில் குறிப்பிட்டுச் சொல்லவேண்டிய முக்கியமான மனிதர் 'தமிழ்த் தாத்தா' என்று அன்புடன் அழைக்கப்படும் உ.வே.சாமிநாதய்யர். தமிழ் மொழியின் சொத்துகளான பல அரிய காப்பியங்களும் புராணங்களும் ஓலைச்சுவடிகளாகப் பல இடங்களில் முறையாகத் தொகுக்கப்படாமல் சிதறிக்கிடந்தன. அவற்றையெல்லாம், தமிழ் மேல் உள்ள ஆர்வத்தினாலும், நமது இலக்கியங்கள் பரவலாக மக்களிடம் போய்ச் சேரவேண்டும் என்ற உயர்ந்த நோக்கத்தினாலும் தேடிக் கண்டுபிடித்து, அவற்றை ஆராய்ந்து, தொகுத்துப் புத்தகமாகப் பதிப்பித்தார் உவே.சா. இவரது தன்னலமில்லாக் கடின உழைப்பினால்தான் பல காப்பியங்கள், பல அரிய நூல்கள் இன்று நம்மிடையே உள்ளன. இல்லையென்றால் இவையெல்லாம் என்றோ அழிந்து போயிருக்கும். ஒவ்வொரு தமிழனும் மறக்கக் கூடாத மனிதர் உவே.சா. அப்படிப்பட்ட பேரறிஞரின் வாழ்க்கையையும், அவரது வாழ்வில் நடந்த பல சுவையான சம்பவங்களையும், தமிழ்ச் சேவைக்காக. அவர் மேற்கொண்ட முயற்சிகளையும் நேர்த்தியாகச் சொல்கிறது இந்தப் புத்தகம்.
