"Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910), one of the great novelists of the Russian literary world, belonged to the country's famous aristocratic family. He lost his parents at a young age and was brought up by relatives. In 1844, he left his law studies halfway through and served in the army for some time. He married Sophia in 1862. They have 13 children. But his married life was not a happy one. He traveled around European countries.
A death sentence Tolstoy saw in Paris affected him deeply. He witnessed the injustices of war and later reflected them in his writings.
Although Tolstoy wrote a lot, his best is War and Peace. He has beautifully depicted the advantages and disadvantages of the aristocratic society during his time. People who have goals in life and tend to change them often become storytellers.
The emperors, Czar, Napoleon and military officers in this novel are based on real characters. Tolstoy brilliantly portrays the lifestyle of people living in the upper echelons of society through their conversations. At the same time he mentions the meaning of their silence in a few lines.
